About Business Services
Business development services include direct assistance and packaging financial programs to firms in Eastern Maine and those interested in investing in the region. There are a wide variety of programs, including business counseling, government procurement, technical and research and development assistance, and incentive programs for new business projects. EMDC's role as a secondary lender is to work with banks and other private and public funding groups to leverage the capital available to businesses. Whether you need to fund a start-up, finance an expansion, buy equipment, obtain working capital, or purchase real estate, EMDC can provide the resources you need to enhance your access to capital. EMDC's Maine Procurement Technical Assistance Center (Maine PTAC) works with businesses that want to sell their product or service to a government agency - whether federal, state, municipal, or outside the US. PTAC clients receive a daily listing of opportunities via email, access to past procurement histories, one-on-one counseling, and technical assistance that will make your business more competitive in the government marketplace. The Tri-County Workforce Investment Board, linking workforce development and economic development at EMDC, operates four CareerCenters. Employers can advertise job openings at no cost and applicants can be recruited and pre-screened for firms. Additionally, the centers can design on-the-job training, apprenticeship programs, Labor Market Information, and assist in accessing state training dollars. EMDC's Maine Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) are dedicated to helping Maine's small businesses succeed. With outreach offices in Hancock, Penobscot, Piscataquis, and Washington Counties, the centers offer free, confidential, and comprehensive one-on-one business counseling. Counseling covers such topics as accounting, financing, management, marketing, and production. Also available are monthly business-planning workshops to clients who are starting, expanding, or financing a business. Disadvantaged Business Enterprise Supportive Services at EMDC is directed to help woman- and minority-owned businesses that have a product or service which the Maine Department of Transportation (Maine DOT) might utilize in transportation, bridge or highway construction. The business must be 51% owned and managed by a woman or minority and have been established for two years. The goal is to help the group become more successful in obtaining contracts connected with a Maine DOT project, either directly or as a subcontractor to a prime contractor. The Greater Bangor Convention & Visitors Bureau is a non-profit membership organization, which provides destination marketing and visitors services for the Greater Bangor Region, including the Bar Harbor Coastal area. EMDC provides a variety of mapping services, from simple community maps to full-service GIS analysis in your community.
