CANUSA games return a success, organizers hope to make it an annual event

BANGOR, Maine (WABI) – CANUSA, pronounced Can-oos-ah, is back!
The CANUSA cross-border basketball tournament has officially returned to Maine for the first time in 32 years, with Fort Fairfield High School hosting the championship matchups.
On the high school boys’ side, Canada brought home the cup as Carleton North defeated Madawaska 44-40. In the high school girls’ championship, Penobscot Valley emerged victorious over Houlton, 40-20, in an all-USA final.
In middle school girls’ action, the East Coast Selects defeated Carleton North 33-26 in an all-Canadian matchup. Meanwhile, Evan McQueen proved to be the tournament’s top sharpshooter, winning the cross-border three-point shootout.
WABI spoke with Lee Umphrey from the Eastern Maine Development Corporation about this year’s run and what lies ahead for the tournament’s future.
