Whole Oceans officials hold meeting to discuss future in Bucksport
BUCKSPORT, Maine (WABI) - Bucksport area residents were offered a glimpse into a large part of the town's economic future Tuesday evening.
Last month aquaculture company Whole Oceans announced plans to purchase the former Verso Paper mill site with the intention of investing hundreds of millions of dollars to build a salmon farm.
Tuesday company officials hosted an informational meeting to explain what the next steps of the operation will hold and what changes and opportunity people can expect.
"We expect to start construction in the fall of '18 so, you'll start to see some construction type activity later this year," said Whole Oceans CEO Rob Piasio. "Prior to that we'll be doing pre-construction site analysis, so we'll have people on site throughout the year and it'll be increasing throughout the year into the fall."
"I worked in the Bucksport mill for 38 years and I'm looking for closer employment," said Tim Craig. "I have a nice little job down at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital, but if I can find something closer to home that would be even better. That's primarily my interest in it and also I'm a taxpayer in the Bucksport community."
